چکیده
Volume 84, Number 2 www.aafp.org/afp American Family Physician 177 Procalcitonin is a precursor to calcitonin that is elevated only in the presence of a bacterial infection. Measurement of procalcitonin is being pushed as a way to determine the presence or absence of bacterial infection and, therefore, as a way to reduce antibiotic use. But, how well does it work in the patients family physicians see? Why are the results of this study not as convincingly positive as the results of other studies?

Procalcitonin-guided antibiotic treatment of respiratory tract infections in a primary care setting: are we there yet?
Clinical signs of infection do not allow for correct identification of bacterial and viral aetiology in acute respiratory infections. A valid tool to assist the clinician in identifying patients who will benefit from antibiotic therapy, as well as patients with a potentially serious infection, could greatly improve patient care and limit excessive antibiotic prescriptions. Procalcitonin is a ...
متن کاملCan serum procalcitonin measurement help monitor the treatment of acute bacterial meningitis? A prospective study
Background: Previous studies have demonstrated the value of serum procalcitonin (PCT) as a marker of bacterial infection, as well as the rapid decrease in its concentration with appropriate antibiotic treatment. The aim of this study was to determine the variation in serum PCT levels over time during the treatment of acute bacterial meningitis (ABM) in adults. Methods: In this prospective analy...
متن کاملUse of procalcitonin in patients with various degrees of chronic kidney disease including renal replacement therapy.
Procalcitonin (PCT) has been shown to be a useful surrogate marker in identifying patients with various bacterial infections. PCT has been studied as a diagnostic marker in differentiating bacterial pneumonia from other respiratory conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease exacerbations or viral pneumonia. Differentiating bacterial from nonbacterial pneumonia using PCT has shown ...
متن کاملProcalcitonin and C-Reactive Protein in Hospitalized Adult Patients With Community-Acquired Pneumonia or Exacerbation of Asthma or COPD
BACKGROUND Antibiotic overuse in respiratory illness is common and is associated with drug resistance and hospital-acquired infection. Biomarkers that can identify bacterial infections may reduce antibiotic prescription. We aimed to compare the usefulness of the biomarkers procalcitonin and C-reactive protein (CRP) in patients with pneumonia or exacerbations of asthma or COPD. METHODS Patient...

Abstract Background: Measurement of serum level of procalcitonin in patients with H1N1 influenza could decrease the consumption of unnecessary antibiotics. This study aimed to determine the serum levels of procalcitonin in patients with swine flu (H1N1) in the Hajar Hospital of Shahrekord in 2011. Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study patients presenting with clinical manifestati...
